Clinical decision support
Xylitol toxicity calculator
Estimate xylitol dose and toxicity risk for dogs based on product type and amount ingested.
Reference ranges & assumptions
Threshold defaults align with Merck/MSD Veterinary Manual guidance: hypoglycemia risk near 0.1 g/kg and hepatic injury risk near 0.5 g/kg. Product concentrations are estimates; adjust to the specific label.
Safety checks
- This tool supports calculation and education only.
- It does not diagnose, prescribe, or replace current clinical references.
- Verify patient-specific decisions with current toxicology references, hospital protocols, and veterinarian judgment.
- Xylitol concentrations vary widely by brand and product. Use custom input when unsure.
- Confirm weight and amount units before calculating.
Basis and limits
- Calculation basis: total xylitol (g) = amount × g per unit (from assumptions). Dose (mg/kg) = (total g × 1000) / body weight (kg).
- Assumed concentrations: defaults are estimates and vary by brand. Adjust in the Assumptions panel to match the specific product.
- Grams input: the grams option means grams of xylitol. If only total product weight is known, convert from the label concentration first.
- Toxicity thresholds: hypoglycemia risk >0.1 g/kg; hepatic necrosis risk >0.5 g/kg. Adjustable in assumptions.
- Scope: this tool estimates exposure. It does not replace toxicology consultation or clinical judgment.
Formula audit trail
1. Convert amount to grams of xylitol using product-specific concentration from assumptions.
2. Total xylitol (mg) = grams × 1000.
3. Dose (mg/kg) = total mg / body weight (kg).
4. Risk level is categorized against the editable thresholds in the Assumptions panel.
Calculation steps will appear here for verification.
